Dewitt Clinton Griswold1

     Walter DeWitt Layne was named for Dewitt Clinton Griswold.2 He was born on 28 March 1893 at Grundy County, Tennessee.1 He was the son of George G. Griswold and Martha J. Bennett.1 He married Mary Mable Layne, daughter of William M. Layne and Cynthia Ann Hunter, between 1918 and 1920 at USA.1 He appeared on the census of 18 April 1940 at Red Bank, Hamilton County, Tennessee.3 He was an investigator for the Southwestern Railroad. in 1945.1,4 He died on 16 April 1946 at Chattanooga, Hamilton County, Tennessee, at age 53.1,4

GRISWOLD - DEWITT CLINTON, age 53, investigator for the Southern Railway, died suddenly at his home, 3801 Oweda Terrace, Red Bank, Tuesday morning at 8 o'clock. Surviving are his wife, two sons, Glenn and Dewitt C. Griswold, Jr; daughter, Mary Elizabeth Griswold; four brothers, Harlin, Murphy and Gillie Griswold of Altamont, Tenn; Lee Griswold of Louisville, Ky; a sister, Mrs. E. C. Shelton of Altamont. Mr. Griswold was a member of of the Red Bank Baptist Church and Mountain City Lodge No. 549, F. and A. M. Funeral services will be held from Page-Hancock Funeral Home Thursday afternoon, 2:30, with Revs. H. L. Smith, R. G. Sherrer and A. L. Lowrance officiating. Interment will be in Chattanooga Memorial Park with Mountain City Lodge in charge of the services at the grave. Pallbearers will be W. J. Lee, W. R. McCrory, R. C. Card, R. K. Wood, H. W. Lamb and E. M. Kayler. Body will remain at the funeral home.4

He was buried on 18 April 1946 at Chattanooga, Hamilton County, Tennessee.1,4
